Michigan Scheudenfraude

9/10/2007 at 2:20pm

Arkansas has taken its lumps every so often, such as in 2004-2005 and up to the opening game humiliation in 2006 against Southern Cal, so it's always nice to see year-in, year-out power, especially one from the Big Ten, get theirs.

So it is with Michigan, which proved the loss to Appalachian State on Sept. 1 wasn't a fluke after all, as the Wolverines looked like a start-up junior college program against Oregon. Truly, the Ducks, the mighty Ducks, could have hung half-a-hundred easily on the Wolverines on Saturday.

Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch makes our job easier here by piecing together the entertaining writing from the Michigan-based scribes, including Mitch Albom, on the latest UM debacle at home.

And to think that on Saturday, the 0-2 Wolverines will meet an 0-2 Notre Dame; that both are 0-2 at the same time has NEVER happened. Chad Henne isn't expected to play. Onetime Arkansas recruit Ryan Mallett of Texarkana, Texas, may be a lot of time on Saturday. If they weren't playing each other, it would be a safe bet that Notre Dame and Michigan could both be 0-3 after the third week of the season. Alas, somebody has to win.

We just remember how arrogant and snarky Michigan coach Lloyd Carr seemed to be back in late December 1998 as he prepared his Wolverines to meet Arkansas in the Citrus Bowl, how he just came across as feeling better than his counterpart on the other side, Houston Nutt. Maybe he was just in a bad mood, or maybe tired of having to be back in Orlando again instead of playing for the national championship.

Well, Lloyd will be going out likely with his head on a platter this season. It won't be pretty, there won't be any championships to claim, but we'll enjoy it.
