We Keep Getting This Feeling: More Option on the Way

9/10/2007 at 4:01pm

Last week on "Sports Rap," the trio of Shawn Arnell, Wally Hall and myself were discussing what the Hogs might do offensively if Casey Dick continued to underperform at quarterback. I immediately tossed out the idea that Arkansas would run more option with Darren McFadden at quarterback. We all agreed that fans would see more "WildHog" plays for McFadden.

But what stood out to me against Troy were the old belly series hand-offs that McFadden had when he ran from the shotgun formation. This was classic, straight-outta-Ken-Hatfield stuff that new offensive coordinator David Lee had put in during the offseason. And with it comes more option plays. Which, we've got to say, would be a lot more logical for a team with this array of backs than trying to improve a passing game that can't be improved without bringing in better players.

So, today, we catch this column in the Northwest Arkansas Times by Terry Joe Wood about the "Racehorse" formation, as opposed to the "WildHog." The "Racehorse" saw a few busts and mishandles against Troy, and the Hogs have been working on them with McFadden. See, it's all about the "meshpoint," and that means OPTION football. Look for more of it Saturday against Alabama.
