Arkansas Knocks Off Washington State, Up Next: No. 1 Arizona State

6/8/2010 at 9:30am

Arkansas advanced to the NCAA Tempe Super Regional against Arizona State on Monday.

Here's a brief rundown from Azcentral.com of what the No. 15 Razorbacks are in for against the top-seeded team in the country:

The Sun Devils (50-8) swept a sixth consecutive home regional (18-0 record) to reach 50 wins for a second consecutive season. They are in a super regional for a fourth consecutive year and seeking their fourth College World Series appearance since 2005.

Arizona State was undefeated in its regional. The Sun Devils defeated Wisconsin Milwaukee 6-2, then posted 12-1 and 8-4 victories against Hawaii.

Arkansas' road to the Tempe Super Regional was a little longer. After starting with a victory against Grambling, it took three victories against Washington State to advance, plus the Razorbacks are dealing with injuries to key players.

Following Monday's 7-2 victory in an elimination game, UA coach Dave Van Horn was looking forward to the matchup. And he liked the fact the series didn't start until Saturday.

"I saw that and smiled," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn said of the start time. ASU-UA will play at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.

It's worth noting Washington State is the only team to win a series against the Sun Devils. Comparing scores and results is rarely a gauge of things to come, but it is always interesting to note.
