LITTLE ROCK – An attorney for Dallas Cowboys running back Felix Jones has issued a cease-and-desist demand to Brian Davis of Little Rock, instructing him to stop using Jones’ name and likeness without permission.
Contrary to published materials, Jones will not be attending a youth football camp organized by Davis on July 16-17 in Little Rock, Jones said on Monday. Jones' attorneys say Davis also falsely claimed that Jones would sign autographs at a June 24 Arkansas Travelers baseball game, a claim that neither Jones nor his management authorized. ArkansasSports360.com reported that several hundred fans at Dickey-Stephens were left disappointed when Jones was unable to sign autographs that the Travs' front office had thought he could sign.
Jones' contract with the Topps sports card company prohibited him from being able to sign his name to memorabilia as planned, with fans having lined up and paid $10 for the expected souvenir.
“Mr. Davis does not represent me in any formal capacity,” Jones said. “His statements of my participation in these events were made without permission from my management or me.”
Jones said he feels badly that fans were falsely led to believe he would make the appearances. As such, he has scheduled an autograph session at the Travelers’ July 21 home game against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Jones will sign autographs from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Autographs are free with paid admission to the game.
“Interacting with fans – especially the kids – is one of the best things about being a professional athlete,” Jones said. “One thing I’ve learned is that when you become a public figure, there are some people who don’t necessarily have your best interest at heart. I appreciate the Travelers, the youth football players and the fans understanding this misrepresentation. I’m eager to see everyone, and I can’t wait for July 21.”
Pete Laven, general manager for the Arkansas Travelers, said he appreciates Jones’ understanding of the situation and offering to return to Little Rock later this month.
"Felix was as blind-sided by last month's mix-up as we were,” Laven said. “I am impressed that he has voluntarily offered to return to Dickey-Stephens Park to sign autographs. This really shows what kind of person he is. We appreciate his generosity, and look forward to our fans having the opportunity to meet Felix on July 21.”
