Bobby Johnson is stepping down as head football coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores after nine years. The Associated Press says he's leaving for "personal reasons."
Johnson called it a very difficult decision but one not prompted by health concerns for either himself or his wife.
"Football is not life, but it's a way of life and it consumes your life," Johnson said. "You only have so many years to live, and you want to see a different way."
Assistant coach Robbie Caldwell will be the interim head coach going into the 2010 season.
ESPN.com and Nashville's 104.5 FM The Zone were the first media outlets to report on Johnson's departure. Despite a 29-66 record at Vanderbilt, Johnson is credited with turning the Commodore football program around from an SEC doormat to mid-level contender in the conference's East Division. Johnson was hired by Vanderbilt in 2001, replacing Woody Widenhofer.
