Hayden Simpson, the Chicago Cubs' top pick in the recent Major League free-agent draft out of Southern Arkansas University, has mononucleosis and will not play summer rookie ball, the Cubs scouting director, Tim Wilken, said Tuesday.
Simpson was supposed to start his professional career in Boise with the Class A short-season team, where the former Mulerider pitcher reported on Monday. Simpson was the surprise pick of the MLB draft after going 13-1 with a 1.81 ERA for the NCAA Division II Muleriders.
"Maybe this is a blessing in disguise," Wilken said. "Not for Boise and not for the selfish Tim Wilken, who wants to see him in a game."
The Cubs planned on having Simpson report to Mesa, Ariz., after he signed on June 19 and then report to Boise. The day he signed, Simpson had a side session at Wrigley Field with Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
