When the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Arkansas third baseman Zack Cox with the No. 25 overall pick in this year's MLB Draft it seemed like a forgone conclusion that he had played his last game in college.
Maybe not…?
Cox still has not signed with the Cardinals and the deadline for doing so is Aug. 16. He’s among a group of former Hogs who haven’t signed including Brett Eibner (Kansas City Royals), Drew Smyly (Detroit Tigers), Collin Kuhn (Detroit Tigers).
Here’s more from Yahoo’s Kendall Rogers:
• Arkansas has a chance to get lucky by the deadline. It also has a chance to lose out on several talented players, including a pair of high school signees. For current players, first rounder Zack Cox and second rounders Brett Eibner and Drew Smyly have yet to sign. Cox, sources say, is asking for a colossal amount of money, which in turn is testing the Cardinals resolve. Eibner and Smyly, meanwhile, were drafted by the Royals and Tigers, respectively. Eibner is expected to sign and the Tigers are expected to match the number Smyly is looking for, leading him to likely sign. Smyly, a redshirt sophomore this year, would have the same leverage after his redshirt junior campaign next summer. The Hogs also await decisions from high school signees Ryne Stanek, a third-round pick of the Mariners, and Cubs seventh-round pick Ben Wells. Stanek has a legitimate chance to show up on campus while Wells is a longer shot.
Most likely Cox and others are using what they can for leverage. It would be especially surprising to see Cox back at Arkansas, but this process will be fascinating to watch over the next week-plus.
