Ryan Mallett has been named to a pair of prestigious college football award watch lists. Mallett, the preseason all-SEC quarterback selection, was announced today as a candidate for both the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award.

Per the UA media relations folks, here is more info on both awards:

The Maxwell Award:

The honor, in its 74th year, is presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America annually and is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. "Tiny" Maxwell.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 8 and three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 22. The winner of the 2010 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show, being held Dec. 9. The formal presentation of the honor will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah's Entertainment Atlantic City, March 4, 2011.

The Walter Camp Award:

The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in early Nov., with the announcement of its winner coming Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. on ESPN’s SportsCenter. The winner will receive the trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet Jan. 15, 2011 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven, Conn.

Walter Camp, known by many as “The Father of American football,” first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp, formerly a Yale athlete and football coach, is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation, a New Haven-based all-volunteer group, was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of annually selecting an All-America team.

Mallett (as you probably know by now) broke or tied 16 school records in 2009. He threw for 3,624 yards with 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
