Arkansas basketball players and coaches handed out school supplies on Monday at the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club.
“This is a great opportunity to help young people out,” Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey said. “We are very fortunate that we are in a position to assist those that are in need and any aid that we can give to the people of Northwest Arkansas, whether they are young or old, is something that we absolutely need to do. It is just a small way for us to give back to a community that gives the Razorbacks so much support in every sport.”
The Razorbacks gave backpacks to many of the youth in attendance at the club after a short speech by Pelphrey about the importance of academics. Following the distribution, Pelphrey, players and coaches shot baskets and talked to the kids for an additional 30 minutes.
"I love being around kids," forward Marshawn Powell said. "I love helping people out. I didn’t come from anything. I didn’t have anything like this. I feel where these people are coming from. I love to give back."
Arkansas will hold its first team practice Oct. 15.
