Razorbacks' Johnson Named Doak Walker Candidate

8/25/2010 at 9:03pm

Arkansas junior Dennis Johnson is still fighting for a starting spot in the backfield, but he's being considered for an award that goes to the nation's top running back.

Johnson was named as a candidate for the 2010 Doak Walker Award. The award is given annually to the nation’s premier collegiate football running back.

Here's more from the UA:

Johnson returns for the Razorbacks after gaining 369 rushing yards on 57 carries in 2009. He rushed for 107 yards on 14 tries at Florida last season. Johnson averaged 111.1 yards of total offense per game, playing in all 13 contests last season.

The Doak Walker Award was created in 1989 to recognize the nation's premier running back for his accomplishments on the field, achievement in the classroom and citizenship in the community. It is the only major collegiate football award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
