Former Arkansas State first baseman Murray Watts (Jonesboro, Ark.) was named as the Player of the Year by the Kansas City Royals for their Idaho Falls affiliate.
Through 62 games with the Idaho Falls Chukars this summer, Watts is hitting .279 with 49 RBIs on 63 hits, both of which are team highs. He also leads the Pioneer league with 13 home runs and has added nine doubles and a triple on the season.
"It's a great honor to be named player of the year by the Royals, and it has been a really good summer for me so far," said Watts. "I have played a lot of games and enjoyed my time with Idaho Falls. I feel like I have played well and it has been a great experience for me, but I still have a long way to go with the Royals organization. Hopefully I can keep progressing from here, and it has been a great way to begin my pro career."
As a junior last season, Watts led the Red Wolves with a .374 batting average and was also the team leader with 83 hits, 65 RBIs, 13 home runs and 137 total bases. He was named All-Sun Belt Conference and All-South Central Region before entering the Major League Baseball draft after receiving his degree in marketing following the spring semester.
