Remember Sept. 5, 1992, Arkansas fans? Remember how awful that 10-3 loss to The Citadel felt?

Jack Crowe does. Crowe was the Arkansas coach 18 years ago today when the Razorbacks lost to a I-AA team. He resigned the very next day.

Nearly two decades later, Crowe got to experience life on the other end of a stunning upset. Crowe’s FCS Jacksonville State team knocked off Ole Miss 49-48 in double overtime just one day shy of the anniversary of the stunning loss to The Citadel.

Crowe isn’t sure the victory quite makes up for the loss. That was his take immediately after the game when talking with the Anniston Star:

“All I know is you stay in it long enough, everything goes both ways. If it were yesterday, it may have righted a wrong or changed a career path or something, but those are two different worlds.

“I don’t think this feels as good as that did bad at the time, I can tell you that.”

The band played the school fight song. Crowe, tears welling in his eyes and his lips quivering, shook his fist in rhythm with the song. One by one, players hugged him, and he hugged them back. The welling tears began to flow.

Crowe knocked off old pal – and former Razorback head coach — Houston Nutt. Back in 1992 Nutt served as wide receivers coach on Crowe’s staff.
