Arkansas athletic director generated a lot of responses on Monday night after tweeting about uniforms worn in the Boise State-Virginia Tech game.

Football uniforms are guaranteed to be a hot topic with a segment of the fan base. Every offseason before Arkansas’ new duds are unveiled, message boards and talk radio shows are filled with questions about what’s coming.

Switching to Nike in July added a little more fervor to the conversation and, judging from Jeff Long’s Twitter feed last night, fans are still very opinionated on the topic.

Long tweeted about 7:30 p.m. on Monday about the Nike Pro Combat uniforms worn by Virginia Tech and Boise State.

“Wow, those are some ugly uniforms for both BSU and VT! But I am sure the players love them.”

Over the next couple of hours Long retweeted in the neighborhood of 40 replies he got back from followers on the topic. Some said they would support a drastic change in uniforms like the ones displayed by Boise and Virginia Tech and another segment of the fan base wanted things to stay traditional.

Long ended his night by tweeting:

“Appreciate reaction tweet on Uniforms, interesting comments. My count 70/30 like VT and BSU uniforms. Thought it should get a reacation!!”

A few questions that come to mind after seeing the stir Long created:

*Was this a calculated move by Long using his Twitter comments to gauge public reaction if a change ever came up? Or was it just a simple tweet that struck a chord with fans and took on a life of its own.

*What would Nike think? Arkansas just entered into a five-year deal with Nike, the world’s top manufacturer of apparel AND the creator of those “ugly” uniforms.

*And, the final question: Why do people get so excited about the clothes being worn by football players?

A final thought: Twitter is best when utilized as a conversational tool. That's something Long seems to be getting a handle on.
