ArkansasSports360.com's SEC Power Poll: Week 2

9/8/2010 at 11:19am

The Southeastern Conference went 10-2 as a league in Week One, but the ignominy of Ole Miss losing to FCS level Jacksonville State didn't do the league any favors. LSU barely survived short-handed North Carolina. South Carolina and Georgia may have been most impressive last week against inept competition and face off this Saturday in Columbia, while Auburn faces one of its few road tests of the season at Starkville on Thursday. Alabama carries the league banner at home against Penn State.

The Week 2 power poll:

  1. Alabama (1-0). A routine blasting of lousy San Jose State provided the perfect night for RB Mark Ingram to sit out. But now comes a really big one.
  2. South Carolina (1-0). A most impressive opening game for Spurrier and crew, especially his two-headed QB system. But Southern Miss may simply be awful under the Fedora too.
  3. Georgia (1-0). Freshman QB Murray did fine. Bulldogs have great skill around him. Now comes THE test, with victor maybe winning the East.
  4. Arkansas (1-0). We know Mallett is that good, but is the defense really that much better, or is Tennessee Tech that terrible on offense?
  5. Florida (1-0). If the opponent had been anyone but Miami-Ohio last week, Gators would have been embarrassed. They still should be.
  6. Auburn (1-0). Fumbles and the defense should be a concern for Tigers, but QB Cam Newton looked like the real deal in opener.
  7. LSU (1-0). Tigers can thank UNC for taking 13 star Heels out of play. Take Patrick Peterson out though and Tigers stink up the joint and probably lose.
  8. Kentucky (1-0). No joke for Joker as ’Cats wins the Commonweath battle with Charlie Strong's battling Cards.
  9. Mississippi State (1-0). Impressive offensive output against beleaguered Memphis.
  10. Tennessee (1-0). Seriously, the Vols scheduled UT-Martin? That’s worse than Tennessee Tech. Now comes a real team, Oregon.
  11. Vanderbilt (0-1). Will the breaks ever start going the Commodores’ way again, or did they use up a decade's worth in winning a bowl in 2008?
  12. Ole Miss (0-1). Jack Crowe was owed one, and who better than Houston Nutt, on Jack’s staff as receivers coach the day Arkansas lost to D1-AA The Citadel in 1992, to provide it.
