Drink Up: John Daly Doesn't Like the 'John Daly'

9/23/2010 at 12:29pm

You may be familiar with the "Arnold Palmer," a fairly tame, summery drink made half with tea and half with lemonade. Supposedly, Arnold ordered it back when he owned golf and it just exploded from there. Now, a new drink has surfaced called the "John Daly," and Big John from Dardanelle isn't happy about it, Golf Digest reports. It's like the "Arnold Palmer," only with vodka.

This cocktail featuring sweet tea, lemonade and vodka has probably had different names, since it's been around probably as long as golf in America. But, according John Strege, it's showing up on restaurant/bar menus and Daly isn't appreciative. We'd guess that means it hasn't arrived at Daly's own restaurant in Olive Branch, Miss., or over at Lion's Den in Dardanelle.

Strege reports:

One of his followers on Twitter alerted Daly to a Minneapolis restaurant that featured a John Daly on its menu, made with Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Flavored Vodka "and our own muddled lemonade!"

A new chain of restaurants in Southern California, the Lazy Dog Cafe, offers on its drink menu the "John Daily," featuring Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Flavored Vodka and fresh pink lemonade, "giving this refreshing cocktail a bad boy bite," the menu states.

Daly responded with these Twitter posts:

"For all my fans out there hittin the bars & events I'm lookin for your help--ANY PRINTED MENUS, BANNERS OR ADS promoting the 'John Daly' drink--Can you please bring to my attention with a pic and/or a tweet of the bar location & brand of sweet tea! Thanks for lookin out!"

"when distributors are putting their Vodka Bottle Label on Point of Sale w/my name & w/out authorization in order to sell it-TradeMark Infrin"

Arnold Palmer, we figured, was probably flattered about having a tame drink like the "Arnold Palmer" named for him. We thought maybe Daly might be mad that somebody's giving him a bad name because of the addition of the vodka. Instead, it appears Daly just wants a piece of the action.
