The Walmart Championship LPGA golf tournament in Rogers has pledged $500,000 for the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank.

The tournament announced that the gift will help feed 40,000 families in the region. The food bank will also be able to buy a new refrigerated vehicle to transport food to families.

The gift started as a $200,000 donation from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s foundation. The grant challenged the tournament and its sponsors to meet the gift. They surpassed it, and the total came to $500,000.

The tournament features pro-am golf on Wednesday and Thursday, with the tournament itself starting Friday.

The donation is the largest ever made to the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank.
