Our friends at sister pub Arkansas Business recently put together their year-end issue. Many of the stories naturally focus on business or politics within the state.
There were, however, some sports mentions in the fantastic, 34-page issue.
This year’s combined success for Arkansas, Arkansas State and UCA was No. 8 on the Top 10 stories list. All the success in football season meant, according to Arkansas Business, “…the gridiron is where the fun manifested. 2011 was a good year to be an Arkansas college football fan.”
AB goes on to highlight the 10-win season at Arkansas, giving the program its first “back-to-back 10-win seasons since 1988-89.”
Arkansas State gets mention for its 10-win season, Hugh Freeze leaving for Ole Miss and Gus Malzahn shocking the college football world by taking the Red Wolves’ job.
UCA gets recognized for its 9-4 season, including a trip to the FCS playoffs in just the second season of eligibility for postseason at that level.
What a year, huh?
Not all sports mentions were positive, however.
Razorback Coach Bobby Petrino also gets a shout out in the Best & Worst list for 2011. Here’s more from what Arkansas Business calls the “Worst Memory Lapse:”
Bobby Petrino said he couldn’t remember what he said or what caused him to blow a gasket as the Razorbacks faded in the fourth quarter against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge on Nov. 25.
Was the head football coach a poor sport who can deliver ass whippings but can’t take one? Was the outburst the result of the emotional overflow of a tough loss combined with the earlier death of tight end Garrett Uekman? …
We’ll never know for sure because Petrino apparently blacked out or suffered a bout of sudden amnesia syndrome during a fit of finger pointing furry.
Arkansas Business has more to say on the topic, but we’ll leave it there. Pick up a copy if you get a chance to read more on the top business-related stories in Arkansas for 2011.
