For her performance in the pole vault at the Kentucky Invitational, Tina Sutej has been named the Southeastern Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week. In her season debut, she won the pole vault and reached the NCAA auto mark with a winning clearance of 4.35m (14-3.25).
With her victory, Sutej owns the No. 1 mark in the country and SEC. She also became the first competitor in the NCAA to eclipse the 14-foot bar this season. Dating back to the start of the 2011 season, Sutej has now won 14 of her last 15 competitions. A 2011 finalist for the award, Sutej was named to the 2012 Bowerman Preseason Watch List last week.
Through Jan. 16, Arkansas owns three NCAA-leading marks. Sutej has the top pole vault mark, Regina George has the top 400-meter time of 53.61 and the 4x400-meter relay of George, Gwendolyn Flowers, Whitney Jones and Rachel Werner have combined for the top time of 3:36.16.
Sutej and the third-ranked Arkansas women’s track and field team return to action Jan. 27-28 with the Razorback Invitational. The two-day event will be contested at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
