Jim's Notebook: Central, Catholic Will Start Prep Season at War Memorial

The changes in the various Arkansas Activities Association classifications have resulted in some unusual alignments. For instance, Little Rock Central and Little Rock Catholic remain Class 7A schools, and for years they've been in the same conference; but beginning this fall they'll be in different leagues. Central has been shifted to the 7A-6A East, while Little Rock Catholic remains in the 7A-6A Central. So, without a confernece matchup, the schools agreed to open the season against each other these upcoming two years of the new classification cycle. And the first matchup, Central's home game, is being moved to Catholic's home turf at War Memorial Stadium for the second annual Arkansas Alumni High School Football Classic. read more >

Jim's Notebook: Hog Basketball Opponents Pick Up; Red Wolf On WMS Field Stirs A-State Fans
Along with the announcement Wednesday that Arkansas would be competing in this season's Las Vegas Invitational over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Razorbacks will have plenty of nonconference opposition that could help the Ratings Percentage Index, no matter the game's result. Meanwhile, more than 250 Arkansas State fans glimpsed the turf at War Memorial Stadium on Wednesday in a way like it had never been seen before. read more >

Jim Harris: Reynolds Refuses To Lose, Needs Other Razorbacks To Join Him

Jim Harris: Reynolds Refuses To Lose, Needs Other Razorbacks To Join Him
Baseball fans in central Arkansas weren't simply treated to the once-a-year Arkansas Razorback appearance Tuesday night. What they saw was a microcosm of the Hogs' season of recent weeks, all rolled into 10 innings. This one, the Razorbacks won 6-5. A good many of the 10,512 fans who paid to see it were still around when junior third baseman Matt Reynolds singled sharply past the lunging Louisiana Tech second baseman, advanced on walk to Brian Anderson, stole third on his own and came home when the catcher's ill-advised throw to third bounced into left field. It completed a mostly marvelous night for Reynolds, who homered, doubled, singled twice and walked — and struck out with one out and the bases loaded in the second inning. read more >

Reynolds Takes Matters Into Own Hands, Hogs Win Before 10,512 Fans

Reynolds Takes Matters Into Own Hands, Hogs Win Before 10,512 Fans
With Matt Reynolds representing the winning run at second base in the 10th inning on Tuesday, and with the memory of four botched chances earlier in the game still fresh, Arkansas didn't wait for a clutch hit. Reynolds got the green light from Coach Dave Van Horn to steal third if the opportunity presented itself, which it did. On the second pitch from Louisiana Tech's seventh reliever, right fielder Sam Alvis, Reynolds swiped third base and Tech catcher Kyle Arnsberg bounced an ill-advised throw past the third baseman into right field. Reynolds scored easily for a 6-5 Arkansas victory at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. read more >

Jim's Notebook: A Note on 'Notes' Richardson and His Passing

The chubby Nolan Richardson III, or Notes, as everyone knew him, was as quiet and reserve as his father was vociferous and intimidating. He joined the Arkansas staff about the time his brother-in-law, Lee Mayberry, joined the Razorbacks and began his assault on the Hogs' all-time assist record. He went on to land a head coaching job at Tennessee State, but everything imploded in late 2002 and he never returned to coaching. Notes died on Sunday at age 47. We remember him for his easy-going way. read more >
