Jim's Notebook: Central, Catholic Will Start Prep Season at War Memorial

The changes in the various Arkansas Activities Association classifications have resulted in some unusual alignments. For instance, Little Rock Central and Little Rock Catholic remain Class 7A schools, and for years they've been in the same conference; but beginning this fall they'll be in different leagues. Central has been shifted to the 7A-6A East, while Little Rock Catholic remains in the 7A-6A Central. So, without a confernece matchup, the schools agreed to open the season against each other these upcoming two years of the new classification cycle. And the first matchup, Central's home game, is being moved to Catholic's home turf at War Memorial Stadium for the second annual Arkansas Alumni High School Football Classic. read more >

Jim's Notebook: Uekman's Friends Plan Benefit 7-on-7 Tournament; Hog NCAA Memories
Little Rock Catholic football coach David Estes and former Rocket Chase Miller are among the people putting together special event to honor a fallen friend: former Rocket and Arkansas Razorback tight end Garrett Uekman. The Garrett Uekman Foundation will be the beneficiary of a 7-on-7 tournament planned in July for War Memorial Stadium. Uekman, a key contributor as a redshirt freshman for the Razorbacks last fall, died the day after the Mississippi State game of an previously undiagnosed heart ailment. read more >

More high school sports programs are popping up on area FM radio stations for this fall. Two outlets of Crain Media in Little Rock will be carrying games for Little Rock Catholic High and Little Rock Christian Academy, a company spokesman told us. read more >

Despite its large student body, Little Rock Central's football team didn't boast big numbers in recent years. The low numbers and a cycle-down in talent led to a losing streak that eventually led Hall of Fame coach Bernie Cox to step down. His replacement, Ellis "Scooter" Register, vowed to hit the high school's hallways and build up the numbers, and apparently has succeeded. read more >
