Jim Harris' Notebook: Native Son Doc Sadler Extends Nebraska Reach To Arkansas

Nebraska basketball coach Doc Sadler, a native of Greenwood, hoped to get Arkansas on the schedule this season and will continue to work on that, he said Monday at the Downtown Tip Off Club in North Little Rock. Sadler has Little Rock Hall product David Rivers on his roster, tried to sign Van Buren center Hooper Vint (who chose UTEP last spring) and has his eyes on more Little Rock talent. Top assistant Wes Flanigan is from Little Rock Parkview. The Arkansas flavor is felt throughout Sadler's NU program. read more >

Prep Football: PA Bruins Bury CAC, Parkview Wallops Mills in Kickoff Classic Opening Night
Junior quarterback Caelon Harden rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown and passed for two scores in leading Little Rock Parkview to a 39-12 romp over Little Rock Mills in the opening game of the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic at War Memorial Stadium. As one-sided as that matchup was, it didn't match the nightcap, as top-ranked Class 4A Pulaski Academy used its high-octane offense and a fast, much-improved defense to overwhelm Central Arkansas Christian 54-14. read more >

Understandably, Central Arkansas Christian Coach Tommy Shoemaker is hoping for a low-scoring game when his Mustangs open the season on Monday against Pulaski Academy. "Low scoring and controlling the ball," he said. His Mustangs last year were one of 14 Pulaski Academy opponents who couldn't keep up when a football game broke out into a track meet, and Shoemaker knows a wide-open game favors talented Pulaski Academy again this year in the Arkansas High School Kickoff Classic. read more >

Despite its large student body, Little Rock Central's football team didn't boast big numbers in recent years. The low numbers and a cycle-down in talent led to a losing streak that eventually led Hall of Fame coach Bernie Cox to step down. His replacement, Ellis "Scooter" Register, vowed to hit the high school's hallways and build up the numbers, and apparently has succeeded. read more >
