Pine Bluff is known for producing major leaguer Torii Hunter and the incredible athlete Basil Shabazz, who dabbled in the summer sport and tried the pro ranks as well. Pine Bluff was Billy Bock's last stop in a long and fabulous coaching career. The southeast Arkansas city at one time could boast of having the best youth baseball programs in the state and comparable to the top programs in the South. People outside Pine Bluff know names like Hunter, Shabazz and Bock, but it's some of the unsung people behind the scenes that made the sport special. John Gross was one of those men. read more >

Jim Harris: Starting With Hogs' Tyler Wilson Greenwood Well-Represented in Touchdown Club's Awards
A pattern becomes evident with just a quick glance at the brief but illustrious history of the Little Rock Touchdown Club's annual awards. Something's in the water in Greenwood. Daniel Stegall, a former Bulldog quarterback who went on to try professional baseball, was honored as his classification's (4A) player of the year in 2005. Tyler Wilson, who just completed his junior season in leading Arkansas to an 11-2 season, was this year's Southeastern Conference offensive player of the year as chosen by the club. And Drew Morgan, a junior who led Greenwood to yet another Class 5A state crown, was the 5A player of the year. read more >

Fayetteville quarterback Brandon Allen was named Wednesday as the winner of the Landers Award, given annually to the top high school player in Arkansas. Allen, a University of Arkansas commitment, won the closest vote in the award's history against 12 other finalists. read more >
